Natural Disaster... Ms. Hurricane Katrina,
It was August 29, 2005 evening Ms. Katrina rear her ugly head she was a 5 on the scale. She covered the states of Mississippi and Louisiana and parts of Alabama and Texas. I was living on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi at the time in Pascagoula, MS in a apartment complex second floor. My daughter was almost 2 at that time . Where l lived the beach was about less then 10 miles away. Everyone though that, "oh its just another storm it past over in couple hours". But it didn't!
Lord behold me, she wasn't just a Storm but a woman in rage. We was in our apartment the rain started it rain hard about 2 hours then the wind pick up the rain got harder and harder the wind got stronger and stronger until trees and anything that was not nail to the ground was moving in to air. Remember my daughter and l are still upstairs in our apartment the windows was vibrating the building felt like it was moving and objects was hitting the sides of the apartment. Oh, Lord what to do going to do please let my child and me make it though this. By this time it pitch black out there's a huge hole everything I've own was in the parking lots cause the big picture window was gone and the wind got into the front room my daughter and l was in the bathroom closet with the mattress over our hands with blanket and pillows the storm lasted a long time about 4-6 hours for start to finish. To secret to come out l hear the FAMA person call out is anyone here "yes in the bathroom closet" getting out the closet and mattress was wet and had drub on it. With no light, water, or car we was rush to shelter then after 2 days there we was finally taken to my mother house. After about 3 day my sister and l went to see my apartment my mouth open "think you Lord", that all l could say.
About 2 weeks planes and America Red Cross where dropping off food, water, and personal item at mid ground location. My daughter to this day remembers the hardship that Storm put us though. If it rains hard and the wind is blowing, she and l have a negative reaction to it, we are looking at each other crazy but l reassure her its OK mommy here. The consequence of the Storm cause my daughter and l to have a stress attack due to the outcome of the action. My daughter was almost 2 at the time but she knew what was going on due to her mature level and her feeling that this isn't right. Just yesterday, we was talking about how the storm left us with nothing and you don't miss it until its gone.
In the Mississippi really on the Gulf Coast Hurricane are normal to us in my life I've endure 20 plus natural disaster in my life but nothing prepared us for that storm of the century, nobody knew! In other parts of the world like California where earthquakes are the norm and New York where snow up to your wrist is norm. Although these are normal don't make it any less stressful to person having to cope with it. People to this day are still dealing with what that storm take form them a piece of mind, everything l work so hard to get is now gone and the insurance people are nothing holding up their side. Stress like that can send a person into melt down city.

Lizabeth,
ReplyDeleteThank God you and your little girl made it through such disaster. Just back in April of this year, what we thought was a bad storm turn out to be a tornado. My Sister and i were luck it pass by us. I think we were in the middle of it at one point. I say this because it was raining real hard then it just stop and the sun came out like nothing was going on. Just as you blink it got real dark and begin to pour down again.
So many families and businesses lost everything. One of the elementary schools had to be close for the rest of the year.
I say we were both blessed to still be here and tell the story.
